What BounceNot removes from your email list
Each address gets a clear result. Definite failures are marked invalid so you can delete them in one click; risky addresses are flagged so you decide.
Invalid syntax
Malformed addresses with missing @ signs, illegal characters or broken domains, caught on import before you spend a credit.
Dead domains
Domains with no MX records can't receive email. Every message sent to them is a guaranteed hard bounce.
Non-existent mailboxes
An SMTP check asks the mail server whether the mailbox exists, catching people who left a company or abandoned an inbox.
Disposable addresses
Temporary inboxes from Mailinator-style services that expire within hours. Check a single domain with our free disposable email checker.
Duplicates
Addresses already in the list, in any letter case, are skipped on import, so you never pay to validate the same email twice.
Flagged, not deleted
Catch-all domains and inconclusive results are labelled instead of removed. "Delete invalid" only ever removes definite failures.
How to clean your email list in 4 steps
- Export your list as CSV. Download your contacts from Mailchimp, HubSpot, Klaviyo or any CRM. BounceNot reads email addresses from the first column and skips a header row automatically.
- Upload it to a BounceNot list. Create a list, upload the file (or paste addresses), and tick Start validating right away. Results appear live as each address is checked.
- Review and remove bad addresses. Filter by Valid, Invalid or Disposable, open any address to see exactly why it failed, then click Delete invalid to remove definite bounces.
- Download the clean list and re-import it. Export the remaining addresses as CSV and upload them back to your email platform before your next send.
How often should you clean your email list?
For an active list, every three to six months. Addresses go stale constantly as people change jobs and abandon inboxes, so a list that was clean last year isn't clean today. Clean it immediately when:
- you're about to send a large or important campaign;
- you've imported contacts from a new source, event or purchased list;
- you haven't emailed the list in several months;
- your bounce rate starts climbing (around 2% is a common warning sign).

Email list cleaning FAQ
What is email list cleaning?
Email list cleaning (also called list scrubbing or list hygiene) removes addresses that would bounce or damage your sender reputation: malformed addresses, domains with no mail server, mailboxes that don't exist and disposable throwaway inboxes. What remains is a list you can send to safely.
How often should you clean your email list?
Clean an active list every three to six months, and always before a large campaign, after importing contacts from a new source, or when your bounce rate starts climbing (around 2% is a common warning sign). Addresses go stale constantly as people change jobs and abandon inboxes, so a list that was clean last year is not clean today.
How much does email list cleaning cost?
BounceNot charges $0.01 per address: 1 credit validates 1 email, so 10,000 emails cost $100. There is no subscription, credits never expire, every account starts with 100 free validations, and duplicate addresses within a list are skipped instead of charged.
Is there a free email list cleaner?
Every new BounceNot account gets 100 free validations, enough to clean a sample of your list and judge the results before buying credits. To check a single domain for throwaway providers, use the free disposable email checker, which needs no account.
Will list cleaning delete good addresses?
No. Only definite failures are marked invalid. When a mail server doesn't give a clear answer, the address is marked Unknown and kept, and the Delete invalid action never removes it. Catch-all domains are flagged rather than removed so you can decide.
How do I automate email list cleaning?
Send new signups and CRM imports through the BounceNot API as they arrive, so bad addresses never reach your list, and re-validate existing lists on a schedule. Each API validation uses one credit, the same as in the web app.
What file formats can I upload?
Upload a CSV file with email addresses in the first column (a header row such as email is skipped automatically) or paste addresses separated by new lines or commas. Cleaned results can be filtered by status and downloaded as CSV.
